Last 20 days were hectic as hell, but this newsletter is proof enough I survived. I have made new friends, travelled to Pune, met super sexy minds at Lonavala, got some impromptu work done on the trip.

For real:

Anyway, I won’t waste your time. Here are my top recs of June for you.

Books

1/ Win Bigly by Scott Adams

Thanks to Tushar, I am currently reading one of the most well-articulated books on persuasion. You will learn how humans think and what they react to, plus how master persuaders communicate.

If you’ve already read basic books on influence like “How to win friends…” and crossed the threshold, Win Bigly is for you.

2/ What if by Randall Munroe

I missed the xkcd blog era, but I am glad I’m reading Randall. It’s kinda nerdy, geeky, science-y stuff, but I promise you it’s no less than a science fiction film with great humour.

Also I am learning to visualise ideas into sketches. This book has an outstanding presentation of ideas (if that’s your thing.)

Podcasts and YouTube

I haven’t watched many podcasts, but squeezed time to discover cool 10-15 minute videos.

1/ Hard work is not that important

Nikhil Kamath’s speech hit me too hard, especially with the relationship I have right now with time and work. If you think you “work really hard”, you probably should listen to his perspective on hard work.

I have a huge ass essay planned on this, so stay tuned.

2/ Love has nothing to do with relationships

So I spoke to 20 people who watched this video. Those who have had meaningful, strong friendships for over seven years - romantically and otherwise - found the video obvious. Others said their minds were blown.

More cool videos:

Be Smart is a really cool channel, ngl!

Movies and TV shows

It’s surprisingly sad I watched only one show and no movies this month.

  • Panchayat S4: I wouldn’t say it’s great, but it was no less than its previous seasons. It got better with each episode and I love how ‘seasons’ allow makers to explore character and story arcs compared to movies, where you’re always almost inclined to end on an ideal note.

Spoilers ahead. Skip this paragraph to avoid ’em. Binod totally stole the show for me. Beautiful acting and dil se I was happy to see him win. Abhishek’s and Rinki’s progression from cute talks to almost a kiss was way too fast. Man that scene could have been so much better. But everything else is still cute. Also, I love how TVF explored flaws in Pradhan Ji’s character.

Love,
Vikra.
